Law + You Community

LAW+YOU Community Program teaches civics to community members and out-of-school youth.

The goal of the program is to give community members the tools and training to become leaders in their communities and empower them to take an active role in making positive change. We encourage participants to communicate with their government leaders and hold them accountable, do their part to end corruption, and teach others their rights and responsibilities. Empathy, acceptance and cooperation are important building blocks for the program. The interactive format was designed to be easily accessible and efficiently replicated in communities across Liberia.

With funding from Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA), Civics and Service International designed a civics program for low and no-literacy learners that could be taught interactively. The program teaches civics, human rights and peacebuilding skills to out-of-school youth and community members. Memory tools like poems are used in place of hand-outs and books. Games, group discussion and roleplay help to simplify complex topics for understanding and retention.

Community leaders effectively teach the structure of government, human rights and peaceful conflict resolution techniques in rural and urban communities throughout Liberia.
