Civics textbooks will be printed for all Liberian junior high and high schools after the Ministry of Education, Republic of Liberia approves printing of the LAW+YOU civics education textbooks written and edited by Child Steps International (CSI). LAW+YOU: Rights & Responsibilities of the Liberian Citizen is approved by the Ministry of Education as the official textbook for public and private schools in Liberia. The textbook development was funded by Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA) since 2012.
“We have worked toward this goal for a long time,” said Tenneh Johnson Kemah, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of CSI. “There is still more work to be done.”
Country Manager, Otis Bundor, says he is excited to partner with the Ministry of Education for the next steps of the rollout. “We have a great working relationship and that’s the key to bringing all of the pieces of this together for the nationwide rollout.”
Founded in 2012, Civics and Service International, formerly Child Steps International, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit located in Washington, D.C. and a registered non-governmental organization in the Republic of Liberia. CSI launched LAW+YOU civics curriculum in pilot schools in Liberia in 2014. The rollout continued to expand until 2021, when CSI and the Ministry of Education, Republic of Liberia began the first phase of training for the national rollout of LAW+YOU civics in all public junior high and high schools.
A community LAW+YOU program using low/no literacy techniques for interactive teaching launched in 2016. The LAW+YOU Radio show is produced in partnership with the Ministry of Education.
